Apple Pay Launched in India, Giving iPhone Users a New Route to Contactless Payments

Apple Pay has launched in India, giving eligible iPhone and Apple Watch users a new way to make contactless payments using supported cards through Apple Wallet.

Apple Pay is available in India. As of today, eligible Apple device owners in India can use contactless and wireless payments with Apple Pay. Users can add supported debit and credit cards to Apple Wallet and make payments at supported terminals. Apple’s tap-to-pay experience is coming to India, where digital payments are already popular for day-to-day transactions.

What is Apple Pay?

Apple Pay is the digital payment service from Apple that enables users to make payments from their compatible Apple devices. Eligible Apple devices (including an iPhone or Apple Watch) can use the Wallet app to make contactless payments at merchants accepting contactless payments instead of a physical card. A device passcode, Touch ID, or Face ID can be used to authorize payments when you are shopping with Apple.

How does Apple Pay work in India?

Once an eligible card is added to Apple Wallet, users can choose the card when they make a payment and hold their iPhone or Apple Watch near a contactless payment terminal. The device utilizes near field communication (NFC) to communicate with the payment terminal. After the payment is authorized, the payment is settled through the supported card network. Thus, cardholders are not explicitly required to have their physical card with them to complete a supported contactless purchase.

Apple Pay adds another contactless payment option

There is a significant digital payments ecosystem in India, with most money transactions happening through UPI, debit and credit cards, and various mobile wallets. Another payment choice for eligible Apple users with compatible devices and cards, Apple Pay’s contactless form factor works particularly well for rapid payment processing on payment terminals that are contactless-enabled.

Security features for Apple Pay users

Apple Pay provides built-in security features to safeguard your payment information. When you add a card to Apple Wallet, Apple doesn’t store or share the actual card number with merchants.

What the launch means for iPhone users

Apple Pay offers another option for eligible users to make simple, contactless payments directly from their Apple device. Instead of a card, simply hold your iPhone or Apple Watch near a supported point-of-sale terminal. This initiative also puts Apple’s payment service into a competitive and lucrative digital payments space in India. Apple Pay allows supported device users with a compatible card and access to contactless payment terminals to initiate a payment within the Apple ecosystem.
