What Is the Right to Recall?
The right of recall is a way of allowing voters to remove elected representatives from office before their term is finished. Although all voters in India have the ability to vote for their leader, there is currently no national law that allows voters to remove leaders from their position during their term for any of the following reasons: failure to perform, misconduct or failing to keep a promise.
Why the Demand Now?
Chadha contends that five-year elections do not provide a meaningful system of accountability. If representatives do not live up to their promises, become increasingly unreachable, or are subject to credible allegations of misconduct, citizens have limited recourse until a subsequent election cycle occurs. Consequently, he argues for introducing a recall mechanism to promote civic engagement and thus strengthen democracy.
